Collanos Gets ZKB on Board

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

The third largest Swiss Bank, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), comes on board as an additional institutional investor in Collanos Software, a Swiss-American start-up.

Experienced management, promising products, an innovative business model, and a compelling market with a demonstrable growing global user community were the key criteria for the decision. ZKB joins existing notable private and institutional investors American Ecosystem Ventures, and serial Swiss entrepreneurs Andreas Danuser (Swiss VoIP Pioneer) and Reto Hartinger.

The ZKB investment allows Collanos to continue the development of free teamwork and phone solutions and get ready for the launch of the much anticipated Premium services developed along with partner Translumina Networks. ZKB intends to take on a role as an active investor, as Oliver Schärli, Head of ZKB Start-up Finance, was quoted: “Collanos will for sure profit as well from our great networking with other institutional investors“ .

“We are excited that the thorough financial, technical and economical due diligence, conducted by Switzerland’s third largest bank’s Start-up Finance specialists, resulted in this outcome,” said Peter Helfenstein, CEO of Collanos Software. “Since we have been a certified CTI start-up company for a while now, ZKB’s decision further substantiates the quality and outlook of our venture. We are well prepared and confident that we will close our Series A financing round very soon”.

Collanos Gets Zürcher Kantonalbank on Board (German)

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

PR: Global Swiss Start-ups Stand Shoulder To Shoulder

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Collanos Software and beteo, two global Swiss start-ups, close ranks to share resources, expertise and partnerships. Collanos Software CEO Peter Helfenstein in addition takes on the COO position of beteo. Hence both Collanos and beteo can profit from the experiences and structures of both companies. Despite the intensive cooperation and the shared resources, beteo and Collanos will remain clearly distinctive companies.

Dieter Steiger, founder and CEO of beteo as well as Advisory Board Member of Collanos, claims that “Collanos Software is an exemplary Swiss global start-up. With the help of our management team and Peter Helfenstein as our new COO, we’ll position beteo similarly well on the international market. Of course, I’m thrilled at the prospect”.

The joint forces allow both companies to acquire a certain critical size faster and more easily. Marketing and alliance functions can be created in an earlier phase for both Europe and the U.S. Together, these two firms represent a far more interesting service and software partner for large American and European IT-companies such as HP, SAP, Apple or Sun Microsystems. It also makes them more attractive as a potential client for the near and offshore development partners in Ukraine and India. beteo and Collanos shoulder to shoulder can make joint and better use of their expertise in PR, web presence, product management and investments in infrastructure and back office.

“We are fully aware that reduced working hours of Peter Helfenstein may be a risk for both companies. However, we believe that the synergies and lower costs obtained, will fully justify this partnership”, says Franco Dal Molin, founder, president and CTO of Collanos. “beteo is an ambitious, fast growing and profitable company with unique expertise and potential. Being able to benefit from this is a privilege and a great opportunity for our team. Even though the targeted customer segments are different, both companies have to tackle basically the same tasks. Now, we can do so in a joint effort”.

Even with the intensive cooperation and the sharing of resources, beteo and Collanos will remain distinctly separate companies. Peter Helfenstein, CEO of Collanos Software and new COO of beteo, asserts that “despite a very close collaboration, the two global Swiss start-ups want to act autonomously to a large extent. Both are developing independently according to their own strategy. Yet, thanks to the new partner, they will do so more efficiently and effectively. We are open to alliances with additional Swiss start-ups that share global ambitions with us”.

Collanos and the Enterprise

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

In earlier blogs like Disruptive Innovation at Work and Gartner Prediction Supports the Collanos Business Model I wrote about our progressive go-to-market strategy entering new markets for collaboration, and our starting point to ride the most recent consumerization wave across enterprise boundaries.

Two inspiring new blog articles and their discussion threads seem to confirm our approach:

On my desk at work I have two ethernet cables. One is black and one is white. The black one is connected to our corporate network. I use that one when I want to print things. I could also use it for Internet access and stuff, but I don’t because the corporate network blocks a number of ports, including those used for Skype and Second Life. It’s also pretty slow.

The white cable, meanwhile, is a standard consumer-grade DSL connection to the Internet, with nothing blocked at all. Our local IT staff installed it by popular demand, possibly without checking with headquarters (we love our local IT staff!). It’s fast. I use it all the time.

Consumerization of enterprise IT at work…

That doesn’t mean IT should necessarily abandon P2P software altogether. It can often prove extremely useful and efficient. For example, Collanos software can be used for sharing and collaborating on documents between various users in a team or workgroup.

Disrupting the collaboration market outside the enterprise platform and being brought in through enterprise doors via consumerization seems like a promising new business strategy – not only for Collanos.

The Country Short Tail of the Collanos User Community

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

Top 10 lists are out. Analyzing the short tail of registered Collanos users per country is nevertheless revealing. The distribution of the countries is changing slowly, not really surprisingly.

United States is number 1 with 35% of the registrations. This percentage share is growing steadily since the introduction of version 1.1.

Position 2 is Switzerland with 12%! After all, it is Collanos’ home country and Collanos Workplace has a German version of the product. The share of Switzerland is slowly decreasing which actually is expected given the size of the market.

Not surprisingly number 3 is Germany with 9%.

Rank 4, 5 and 6 are Canada, UK, India with each 4% and Australia 7th with 2% as all are strong English speaking markets. These countries have shown the strongest growth percentage over the last month with India having the highest growth rate.

8 and 9 follow the top markets even without national language versions: Netherlands and Italy with 2% of registrations.

Ranked 10 now is China also with 2%. The introduction of the Chinese version has led to nice growth, not only in China but overall in East Asia. Many countries in that area are climbing up the list and are in the meantime positioned between 20 and 30.

And who is positioned to enter the top 10? 11 to 20 are Portugal, Sweden, Austria (Collanos needs some push in the German speaking neighbourhood it seems), Brazil, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Russia, France, Poland and Philippines.

It will be interesting to see the changes over the next few months. Since the numbers of registred users are still small the effects of launching new language versions as well as of the work of active Collanos Ambassadors and communities are strongly influencing the growth of the user base.

Great to see the number of Collanos users growing all over the world. I am glad to share these stats with all of you regularly.

Collanos Momentum Newsletter

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Thought our blog readers would be interested in reading the latest Collanos Momentum Newsletter we sent out via email last week to the Collanos community:

“Since our last Collanos Momentum Newsletter in October 2006 we progressed well towards our goal of becoming a “one million users teamwork internet platform” by the end of 2008. Here’s a short update on our latest milestones:

Collanos’ management and financial foundation has been reinvigorated with the addition of Andreas Danuser, as a major investor and board member. Andreas is a successful serial entrepreneur (Inalp Networks, SwissQual, NetModule, CTModule, Comitas and Translumina) who brings all his VoIP competence into our company.
We are now working on the next investment round, which will allow us to switch gears, further enhancing our offering and, most importantly, solidifying our global structure and reach!

Collanos Workplace, our flagship solution, has matured a lot. On December 14th, 2006, after a six months beta phase, we launched Collanos Workplace 1.0. On February 8th, 2007 we released an important update making it available also in the German language.
Finally, last week, on May 14th, 2007 we launched Collanos Workplace 1.1, our newest version adding new key functionality to the product. Now users can find and invite other Collanos members and team workers around the world, even if they are offline. We also added the ability to restore older document versions of the team at any time. In addition Collanos supports now a third language – Chinese. After English and German this will allow us to increase our user base in the fastest growing internet market.

Since February we further broadened Collanos’ global PR reach. Our head agency, Jenni Kommunikation in Switzerland, was complemented with PR agencies in the United States (FutureWork PR – specializing in social media PR) and Germany (100zehn). This increased the effectiveness of our PR work in these countries very notably.
Just the fact that at CeBIT we were awarded with the “Office Organization Innovation Prize 2007” increased our visibility all over Europe!

Collanos’ user base has grown substantially with nearly 10,000 registrations just on our own website. We estimate the downloads on more than 1000 freeware download sites to be at least 5 times that number!
Using Collanos Workplace 1.1, you can now see for yourself how many users have registered with Collanos.

The growth of Collanos’ user base is fueled by successful use-cases and teams. We started to document these stories and role models, including: JC eBell, Pure Swiss, San Jose State University (SJSU), the agency teams of Jenni Kommunikation and Tweakfest.
With the much improved Collanos Workplace 1.1, new stories will be added frequently over the next weeks.

Early this year we also launched the very successful Collanos Ambassador program. Collanos friends from all over the world, including the U.S., Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Canada, Nicaragua, Brazil and the Philippines, voluntarily motivate, communicate, invite and support other Collanos users in their vicinity. This has been a great reward for our team to see other users so actively engaged with the Collanos community and provide us with valuable feedback.

Is there anything else we can do better? Oh, yes, there is!
We learned a lot over these last few months and have pushed our team decentralization to the maximum and beyond. Technology allows having teams spread all over the world but there are also limitations. As a result, we are going to concentrate our business functions in certain locations with the development organization in Kharkov, Ukraine, and the management and marketing in Switzerland and San Francisco.

Our product needed more time to mature than we had expected. This was a tough learning. The good news is that Version 1.1 is a major step forward and with Version 1.2 we are going to close the final open gaps: Just glimpse into the future with our Founder and CTO Franco Dal Molin.

If you are interested in contributing further to Collanos’ success, we have come up with four examples of things you can do:
1. Use Collanos Workplace with your teams
2. Talk , write, comment about Collanos to others (users, bloggers, analysts, journalists or investors…) about your team success and experience, and, of course, share it with us
3. Motivate and help others understand the value of Collanos-based teamwork – by becoming or nominating an ambassador
4. Invite friends and colleagues to use Collanos
We highly appreciate your help. Collanos Workplace 1.1 is a major milestone in the history of Collanos and a great point to start spreading the Collanos word out to all team-based professionals.

Many thanks to all of you who supported us over these first months, following the launch of Collanos Workplace.”

The World of 2020 has Come!

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

The world in 2020″ and “Core Groove Features for Free” are two recent blog postings from Julien Le Nestour mentioning Collanos.
In “The world in 2020″ he provides an interesting viewpoint supporting our positioning as a disruptive innovation. Where we talk about new-market-disruption and “Serving underserved Collaboration markets”, Julien describes the trends and drivers that are reinforced by the disruption power of Collanos. These trends and drivers include: SMBs’, small organizations’ and individuals’ new role in the global market of 2020 enabled by Globalization, New Demographics, the ability to have atomized structures, more personalized interactions and the availability of better knowledge management solutions.

In the past, superior flexibility, personal relationships and higher responsiveness to customer needs were sufficient to differentiate small, local teams in their respective markets. Physical omnipresence and economies of scale via expensive enterprise platforms were market entry barriers that only large organizations could overcome. The evolution of the internet as a global platform coupled with the introduction of free enterprise-class solutions, such as Collanos Workplace, remove these obstacles altogether. SMBs and small, globally distributed teams can be part of the emerging world of 2020.

It is not only our ambition to deliver new solutions facilitating the way to work in the world of 2020 but we also live this promising new SMB model ourselves. Only a couple of years ago this would not have been affordable for a small company such as ours.
The world of 2020 is here!
